Important repair works at footways and the contraction joints of the Decebal Bridge in Arad City [ completed ]

   The Decebal Bridge, crossing the Mureş River, is situated in the central zone of Arad city connecting this part of the city with the neighbourhood called Under the Borough.

  The bridge represents one of the three passing solutions of the Mureş River, being a very important North-South connection way for the Arad city.
  From static point of view, the bridge presents itself as a continuous beam with 3 spans which totalize a length of 195.00 m.
  The gauge of the bridge is 11.72 m, providing a width of the carriageway of 6.62 m and two footways of each 2.36 m.
  The bridge has a steel caisson superstructure foreseen with steel cantilivers for supporting the footways realized as reinforced concrete slabs.
The situation before the works started:
-          deficitary emplacement of the safety parapet determins the decrease of the carriageway from 7.00 m, as designed, to 6.62 m;
-          the coverage of the contraction joints from the extremities of the bridge are made of a non-tight steel confection facilitating the water infiltration at the structure affecting both concrete and steel elements;
-          the thin surfacing of the footway made of poured asphalt presents exfoliations on large surfaces and important degradations at the joints between the concrete slabs facilitating the water penetration at the steel structure of the footway.
The designed structure:
In order to assure safety and comfort for pedestrians and vehicles on the Decebal Bridge the following was designed:
-          the replacement of the concrete slabs with a solution of a concrete slab on lost shuttering from folded steel sheet. Thus the distance between the contraction joints will be encreased from 0.95 m to 5.90 m thus diminishing the areas likely to facilitate the water infiltration;
-          the steel structure for the footways is build as a grid of HE14A beams and I12 rolled sections which support the lost shuttering;
-          the thin surfacing on the footways is realized as a multiple layer system with a longer life span compared with the usualy used thin surfacing of asphalt; it also contains quartz sand which assures a higher roughness diminishing the slipping effect during rainy weather or in winter;
-          for the safety of the pedestrians a safety parapet was designed mounted on the existing steel border included in the width of the footway;
-          the existing contraction joints will be replaced with Maurer&Söhne contraction joints;
-          the rehabilitation solution of the bridge allows the execution of the works alternately on each footway. Regarding this, no traffic interruption is necessary. A traffic interruption becomes imperative only during the works at the contraction joints when temporarily bridges over the contraction joints were foreseen, in order to allow traffic development during the week.
